Does CBD show up on drug tests?

The topic that we’re tackling today is whether or not CBD will make you fail a drug test – let’s investigate.

If you’re hesitant to try the wonderful world of CBD, it’s okay! There is still a lot of confusion between the differences between cannabis, marijuana and hemp, and what the different effects of each mean for you, your body and your mental health. Can CBD show up on a drug test? We’re here to debunk some commonly held beliefs about CBD.

Marijuana and THC vs Hemp and CBD – what are the differences?

It is important to first take a look at the differences between marijuana and CBD – we know that one makes you high and the other doesn’t, but how? The key reason is that marijuana (for marijuana-derived THC) and hemp (for hemp-derived CBD) are two distinct plants, and although both are under the umbrella of cannabis plants, it is only the marijuana plant that contains high levels of THC, whereas the hemp plant contains high levels of CBD.
THC is an intoxicant, hence creating that ‘high,’ whereas CBD is not – CBD’s positive effects are great, and also legal! This information is key, as THC is often the compound – in THCCOOH metabolite form – that is tested for in drug tests.

Great – so that means that I won’t fail a drug test if I have some delicious CBD gummies?

Whilst hemp-derived CBD is not an intoxicant, it does in fact contain trace amounts of THC – up to around 0.3% — if the plant contains more than this, it is considered to be marijuana. An equivalent analogy for ingesting CBD would be someone cooking with wine to make a pasta sauce: although red wine went into the lasagne’s tomato sauce, by the time the long cooking process is complete, it will only contain trace amounts of alcohol, and certainly not enough for your body to feel any intoxicating effects – the same goes for hemp-derived CBD.
The answer to this question therefore depends on where you are sourcing your CBD oil from. At Happy Hemp, we have testing in place to ensure that the gummies that you ingest are below the 0.3% THC threshold; some other brands, however, may have less controls and sell CBD products that contain higher levels of THC, unbeknownst to you.

So, what’s best practice to ensure that I won’t fail a drug test?

The best way to ensure that you will pass a drug test after taking CBD oil is by making sure that you are buying from trusted, reputable brands, like Happy Hemp, and not exceeding the recommended amounts. All of our recommended dosages are stated on our packaging and are for you to tailor and calculate based on your body weight.
Every person’s body will metabolize CBD slightly differently, so it’s a great idea to start with a low dose to understand how your body reacts to CBD. All of our products contain hemp-derived CBD which is triple lab-tested to ensure purity and reliability – you can find the results of our tests here.
If you have any other concerns or questions, please reach out and say hello! We’ll be more than happy to answer them.
